BROWN, John (1797-1861). The North-West Passage, and the Plans for the Search for Sir John Franklin With a Sequel . London: Stanford, 1860. A presentation copy, inscribed by the author’s son on the inside front cover: “The Rev. Geo[rge] Smith, Chaplain to the Forces. From H[enr]y W[illia]m Brown Esq. / Son of the Author / March 1895[?]” This is the second edition which is the first to include the sequel describing McClintock's Fox expedition. This expedition discovered evidence of Franklin's fate. Arctic Bib. 2303; Hill 195; Ricks p. 147; TPL 3707. Octavo (219 x 137mm). Half-title. Lithographed frontispiece, 3 maps partially handcolored including 2 folding (pale spotting at ends). Original blue cloth gilt (partially unopened, few minor bumps). Provenance : Reverend George Smith (probably “Ammunition Smith” or “Padre Smith,” 1845-1919, chaplain in the Zulu War; presentation inscription) – Explorer Books.
