Amsterdam: Broer Jansz, 1646. 4° (186 x 142 mm). 3 folding plates (plate 2 closely trimmed, cropping border). (Title with some pale staining and small repair at gutter, some intermittent pale browning, tiny wormtrack in lower margins of two gatherings.) 20th-century crushed crimson morocco, by Alix. FIRST EDITION, another issue from the same year has "door het Schip Castricum" on title-page (see Alden & Landis 646/27). The Dutch navigator Hendrik Brouwer transferred allegiances from the Dutch East to the Dutch West India Company in 1642. He investigated the strait discovered by Le Maire between Tierra del Fuego and Staten Island, and attempted to open trade with the Indians of the Isla de Chiloé (in southern Chile).
