Lock marked 1862/TOWER forward of the hammer and with a {CROWN} at the tail without a "VR" underneath, as is appropriate for commercially produced and sold Enfield rifle muskets. Breech with Birmingham commercial view, definitive view and proof marks, as well as a pair of 25 gauge marks indicating .577 caliber. The maker's name JOSPEH SMITH is stamped in the toe line of the stock and a pair of weak JS/s marker marks are present behind the triggerguard along with a weak BSAT (Birmingham Small Arms Trade) mark. The rifle musket retains its ladder rear sight that is graduated to 900 yards and its combination front sight and angular bayonet lug. Both sling swivels and the ramrod are missing. A solid example of a commercially produced U.S. Model 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket that was imported in large quantities by both sides during the American Civil War. Condition: Good. Metal with a thickly oxidized brown patina with some gray on the barrel where the patina has been cleaned away between the lower and middle bands. Metal mostly smooth with some scattered pitting and surface roughness. Markings in metal mostly clear. Lock mechanically functional, bore dark and dirty and pitted with weak rifling. Stock lightly sanded, leaving the markings in the wood weak and smeared. Stock with a missing chip at the tang and with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
