Four-panel dark blue wool body with calfskin sweatband and red silk interior adjustable lining. Brass cruciform spike base with roses accompanied by brass chain chinstrap and brim binding. Elizabethan-era front plate with regimental insignia consisting of a silver sphinx with "EGYPT" on a felt backing surrounded by a belt with "HONI*SOIT*QUI*MAL*Y*PENSE [May he be shamed who thinks badly of it]" motto. The whole surmounted by a St. Edward's Crown and surrounded by laurel wreath, silver banner "SOUTH LANCASHIRE REGIMENT" over a sunburst. Condition: Very good overall. Only minor storage dust and wear with what appears to be a barely visible 1" square repair of body just under left spike base arm. Brass fittings show a dull luster with tarnishing on silver. Lining is in very good condition with minimal wear and no major tears, rips, or other damage. Some evidence of prior cleaning in low areas.
