Folding chart with outline colour, 2 chromolithographic plates, one folding, and 50 lithographic natural history plates, comprising: 21 of birds (all hand-coloured), 4 of reptiles (all plain), 10 of fish (5 plain, 5 chromolithographed), 7 of shells (all hand-coloured) and 8 of insects (3 hand-coloured, 5 chromolithographed). 8 wood-engravings and many text illustrations. (Slight spotting to folding plate and title.) Contemporary calf tooled in gilt and blind, crest with GSF on upper cover, morocco spine label, marbled endpapers and edges (extremities lightly rubbed, spotting to endpapers). FIRST EDITION. Under command of Sir William Wiseman, the Curaçoa sailed from Sydney to the archipelagoes of the western Pacific making stops at Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island, Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji. The voyage is especially notable for the important natural history data collected. The natural history plates are lithographed by Mintern Bros., birds drawn by J. Smit, fish, reptiles & shells by G.H. Ford and the insects by A.G. Butler. Ferguson 7376; Hill 181.
