.577 caliber. 32" barrel secured by two barrel bands. SN: 1412. Blued and color casehardened finish, iron barrel, brass triggerguard and buttplate, European hardwood stock. Lock with the "D-{ANCHOR}-C" trademark of OP Drissen & Co of Liege, Belgium. Their mark is found on other parts as well. Retains the original long-range ladder rear sight, sling swivels on the lower barrel band and in the toe of the stock, front sight and bayonet lug. Missing the brass Eagle motif shield at wrist commonly found on these guns that saw Civil War use. The "Brazilian Light Minie Rifle" name for these Liege-made Light Minie Rifles that were imported during the Civil War was likely coined by pioneer Civil War arms collector and research William B Edwards, who discusses the theory that these guns originally produced for a Brazilian naval contract and were re-routed to American arms purchasers for Civil War use. Most of the guns with Civil War association have a brass shield with an eagle motif at the wrist. This gun had that, which is now missing. At least 5,800 rifles of this pattern were acquired by the US Ordnance Department during the Civil War from arms dealer C.K. Garrison. OHIO marked examples appear from time to time as well. Condition: Good. Retains no finish with moderate wear, heavy oxidation and scattered pitting. Most markings remain legible, missing wrist shield escutcheon. Rear barrel band broken. Action functional, percussion cone damaged. Bore fair, with some visible rifling and showing heavy oxidation and scattered pitting with rifling near the muzzle very weak. Barrel missing breech plug, but tang is in place. Stock fair to good with moderate wear, broken and repaired at the wrist, with some wood loss around the lock mortise. Ramrod an incorrect modern replacement. A well worn and heavily used example of a relatively uncommon Civil War import rifle. A potential restoration project for the talented gunsmith or a source of scarce parts to restore an example missing parts like the rear sight and sling swivels.
