Text in Latin. 300 (of 305, lacking plates 16, 25, 37, 39 and 47 in vol. 5, “Londonium” plate bound in vol. 3, p) double-page engraved plans and views, birds-eye view of Antwerp and plans of Rome and Jerusalem on two sheets, COLORED THROUGHOUT BY AN EARLY HAND. (Titles, first and last leaves with marginal repairs or repairs on verso, some with loss, some plates with repairs on verso, a few corners renewed with small portions supplied in facsimile, a few plates with tears along folds, a few text leaves repaired some with loss, a few plates shorter.) Contemporary mottled calf, spines elaborately gilt (minor repairs to some corners and spine ends). A COLORED LATIN EDITION OF THE FIRST FIVE TOWN BOOKS, the last volume of the series appeared in 1617-18. The Civitates is the first comprehensive atlas of town plans and is one of the great cartographical achievements of the 16th century. Copies were issued in black and white and colored. The project was coordinated by Georg Braun assisted by Frans Hogenberg and Hoefnagel. Other contributors to the assembled geographical information included such eminent figures as Pieter Breughel, and Jacob van Deventer. See previous lot. Koeman B & H 1-5.
