Bradley, Abraham, Jr. Map of the United States, Exhibiting the Post-Roads, the situations, connexions & distances of the Post-Offices, Stage Roads, Counties & Principal Rivers. [Philadelphia: engraved by Francis Shallus,] 1804 [but 1812]
Engraved case map (969 x 1347 mm), printed on four sheets, dissected into 36 sections and mounted on linen (folding to 244 x 152 mm), inset "Map of North America," the principal map and inset both partially colored in outline by a contemporary hand. Original red-roan-backed marbled boards, flat spine gilt-ruled and -lettered "United States"; very worn, spine defective with loss.
After going through several reissues, Bradley's seminal map of the post roads of the United States, first published in 1796, was completely revised and updated in an 1804 edition. While still bearing that date, the present fine example is the fourth issue, from 1812, corrected for political and topographical changes and showing the Louisiana and Missouri territories, both of which were established in 1812. "There has been extensive redrawing of the Mississippi River from the junction of the Ohio north to the Wyaconda River (probably due to the public surveys in southern Illinois, evidenced by the appearance of Township and Range lines there). Numerous other changes from the 1804 edition have been made throughout the map adding new counties, towns, roads, and changed physical features, primarily in the mid and western portions. … Since it was a postal map [it] needed to be current as to towns, road and counties (Rumsey).
Abraham Bradley served as Assistant Postmaster of the United States from 1793 until 1829.
PROVENANCEWilliam S. Warder, Philadelphia (somewhat obscured contemporary notation on binding)
