Saugrain, 1609. 8 o (156 x 92 mm). Collation: 8 4 A-H 8 I 8(-I8, cancelled) K-P 8 Q 4. 135 leaves, foliated. Engraved title, engraved portraits of Marie de Medici and of the author by S. Hacquin. (Some lower margins with wormtracks skilfully repaired, some letters in facsimile.) Modern morocco gilt, edges gilt. FIRST EDITION of the first first book on obstetrics published by a midwife. Louise Bourgeois was the midwife who attended Marie de Medici, the wife of Henri IV. "She was one of the pioneers of scientific midwifery; her Observations was the vade mecum of contemporary midwives. She introduced premature labour in patients with contracted pelvis, an idea probably derived from Par" (Garrison- Morton 6145). Waller 1365; Wellcome I, 1013 (1626 edition); Norman 290.
