Beschreibung:

Printed broadside, 13 x 20.25 in., boldly announcing to Civil War soldiers that the EQUALIZATION BOUNTY BILL! As passed by Congress July 27, 1866, gives $100 ADDITIONAL BOUNTY! To every honorably discharged soldier who enlisted into the Army of the United States since April 19th, 1861, for three years and served his term of enlistment, and who received, or was entitled to receive, but $100 Bounty. The poster then goes on to explain conditions under which other honorably discharged soldiers, widows, minor children, or parents may be entitled to additional bounty. AN INCREASE IN PENSION is heralded for widows of soldiers or to their children. Also, $15 per month to every soldier who has been disabled to the extent of the loss of a hand or a foot, a new application must be made. Signed in type by T. W. Tallmadge, Authorized Military Claim Agent, COLUMBUS, OHIO. who requests that individuals IMMEDIATELY SEND YOUR DISCHARGES. A final recommendation is printed vertically along the left side of the poster. Signed in type by Major General W. T. Sherman, the comment states that I have known Theodore W. Tallmadge since his childhood, and his father and family quite as long, but have never had any personal knowledge of his business. Being applied to, I am willing to express my belief that he is worthy of confidence, and capable to discharge the business he has undertaken at Columbus, Ohio. In the aftermath of the Civil War, bounty equalization emerged as a significant issue for veterans. The passage of the Equalization Bounty Bill in 1866 allowed the men who had enlisted early in the war and without bonuses to receive equal compensation to the soldiers who had enlisted later in the conflict. Claim Agent T. W. Tallmadge was commissioned Assistant Quartermaster and Commissary in the Ohio State militia in May, 1861, and given the rank of Captain. During his brief time in the service his duties included distribution of supplies to the troops and managing funds. Upon retiring from the service in 1862 he started his own business as a military claim agent, assisteing in processing claims for the increasingly large number of veterans filling the ranks of the U.S. pension system. Provenance: Property of Another Consignor Condition: Yellow paper. Some ghosting not affecting text. Overall document is in very good condition.
