Boulton (Matthew).- Bible, English. The Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament and the New..., list of subscribers (third state), Matthew Boulton's copy with manuscript details of family births, deaths etc. in ink in contemporary hand on verso of final leaf of Apocrypha (blank page facing beginning of New Testament) and with another note and an early 19th century list of Matthew Boulton's children's illnesses and vaccinations loosely inserted (lightly stained), a few other relevant notes loosely inserted, light foxing, sumptuous contemporary red morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt with decorative borders and fan-shaped corner-pieces, spine gilt in compartments with tooling and six raised bands, black morocco label, g.e., attractive marbled endpapers, Boulton sale book-label at foot of front pastedown, a little rubbed, scuff to lower outer corner of upper cover repaired, [Gaskell 26], folio, Cambridge, John Baskerville 1763. ⁂ Provenance: Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), of Birmingham, manufacturer and business partner of the engineer James Watt; bought at sale 'Books From the Library of Matthew Boulton and His Family', Christie's 1986 lot 21. Superbly-bound copy of Baskerville's great folio Bible, with an important Birmingham association. Both notable inhabitants of Birmingham Boulton and Baskerville knew each other well, as letters and invoices in the Birmingham Assay Office show. Most of Baskerville's books were issued unbound but a significant number were bound by a particular bindery, mostly for members of Baskerville's family or friends. These have three common distinguishing features: the "watercolour" marbled endpapers, the floral roll-tool used on the covers, and the lettered labels in Baskerville type. This particular binding is very similar to that on the 1763 Bible owned by John Baskerville's wife, Sarah, although Boulton's copy is more sumptuous, using gold tooling rather than blind as on Sarah's copy.
