Complete collection, richly illustrated with ± chromolithographs protected by tissue guards showing mostly flowers (some representing parterres, baskets and insects), ca. plates in b/w and numerous in texto. The superb chromolithographs are the work of Pierre De Pannemaecker (and his son, from onwards), a pupil of botanist Louis Van Houtte. He became professor of drawing at the horticulture school of Ghent and illustrator for many botanical periodicals. The aim of this periodical was to "mettre l'horticulture à la portée de tous" and to support "bonnes plantes délaissées ou méconnues", "plantes ornementales vulgaires et faciles à la culture" (Préface de 1875-1876). It therefore favourised common species such as chrysanthemum, azalea, rose, begonia, rhododendron, hydrangea, tulip, petunia, clematis, verbena, carnation, hyacinth, narcissus, cyclamen, iris, dahlia, etc. Nevertheless it also gave space to more exotic flowers, especially orchids, which were very popular in the late 19th c. Volume offers at p. a stamp published on the occasion of the XIV International Exhibition of the Royal Society of Agriculture and Botany of Ghent "Floralies gantoises".
