BOSWELL, James. The Life of Samuel Johnson . London: Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1791. 4 (279 x 210mm). Engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved plates in volume II. (Some light spotting, and occasional soiling, vol. II lacking initial blank.) Volume I bound with: The Principal Corrections and Additions to the First Edition of Boswell's Life of Dr. Johnson [London: Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1793], (Title page to the Corrections is lacking). Contemporary tree calf, flat gilt spines with red morocco lettering-pieces. Provenance : Hugh Bailye, Hanbury, January 1st 1794 (inscription on front free endpaper of vol. I); Smith Child Newfield Hall 1833 (inscription on front pastedown of vol. I). AN ATTRACTIVE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. One of the two plates shows the Round Robin addressed to Johnson on the subject of Goldsmith's epitaph, while the other gives facsimiles of Johnson's handwriting at different ages. S4 recto in volume I is in second state with the 'give' reading. Pottle 79 & 113; Rothschild 463 & 466. (2)
