The present copy contains numerous footnotes relating to markings in the text in a neat contemporary hand. The authorship of the notes is discussed in letters by Mabel Zahn of Charles Sessler, Philadelphia: "the copy is either the prized possession of an interested contemporary or one of the copies that was used for revision in later editions." Also laid-in at p.302 is a facsimile of the original, unexpurgated p.302 containing Johnson's views on conjugal fidelity, which is preserved in only a very few copies. "Homer is not the more decidedly the first of heroic poets, Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of the dramatists, Demosthenes is not more sensibly the first of orators, than Boswell is the first of biographers" (Macaulay).
