Benton was a prominent Massachusetts politician who ran for Governor in 1912. The first winner of the cup, Charles J. Glidden, was a telephone pioneer who enthusiastically promoted the automobile, and later the aircraft, and established the Glidden Tour, a reliability competition for automobiles.
