Bossi's Chronica is a universal history of the world, beginning with Creation, passing through the mythical and classical worlds of Antiquity, and progressing quickly through the Middle Ages and Renaissance. A Milanese nobleman, Bossi gives pride of place to Italian, and particularly Milanese, history, chronicling the fate of the Dukes of Milan simultaneously with that of the city. He charts the invasion of Milan by the Goths at various times, by the Huns under Attila, and the near destruction of the city by Barbarossa in 1162. Written with the approval of Lodovico Sforza, the chronicle glosses over the struggle for succession in the duchy and Francesco Sforza's subsequent claim to power. Bossi relates Francesco's reign as a time of harmony, thereby contributing to the Sforza campaign to gain imperial recognition (see G. Ianziti, Humanistic Historiography under the Sforzas , 1988). Among the world events noted is the invention of printing by Johann Gutenberg (r8r). HC *3667; BMC VI, 722 (IB. 26067); GW 4952; IGI 2017; Pellechet 2779; Goff B-1040.
