(Light marginal dampstaing on a few leaves, tiny wormholes at beginning and end catching a few letters.) Contemporary blind-tooled German (Augsburg?) calf over wooden boards, outermost roll representing a hunting scene, inner roll of interlaced ropework, repeated in central panel, flower tools, eight brass cornerpieces and two central bosses, two brass catches, spine gilt-tooled (repairs at ends of spine, few other repairs, clasps lacking, some worming). Fine edition of the great work of canon law by Bonifacius VIII (Benedetto Gaetano). Johannes Andreae was one of the great canonists of his day and his gloss in incorporated in all early editions. The hunting roll is not in Kyriss, but the bosses and cornerpieces are reproduced on plate 176, an Augsburg binding. The roll is very large, showing two deer (one with antlers) pursued by a hunter with a horn and long staff, accompanied by two dogs.
