BOETHIUS, Anicius Manlius Torquatus Severinus (480?-524 ?). De philosophico consolatu sive de consolatione philosophiae . Edited by Sebastian Brant Strasbourg: Johann Grüninger, 8 September 1501. 2° (277 x 200mm). 78 woodcut illustrations, including 4 large woodcuts, fine woodcut historiated initials, the first large cut and 2 initials with early colouring in pink or ochre. (Printer’s device cut away from last leaf, wormtrack in first and final few leaves affecting a little text, dampstain at corner of final quires.) Contemporary German half pigskin over wooden boards tooled in blind, fragment of an early vellum document as rear endleaf, modern spine label (rubbed, corner of lower side and head of spine repaired, one clasp renewed, another missing). Provenance : Isny monastery (title inscription, annotations) -- Thomas Hodgkin, Newcastle-on-Tyne (1831-1913; bookplate) – E.P., 1961 (inscription at end).

Grüninger was the first printer to construct single woodcut scenes by mounting two to four woodcut blocks within a single frame that extended horizontally across the printed page. He first used this technique with his Terence and Horace editions and perfected it with this edition of Boethius. Among the 4 large woodcuts is an early depiction of Rome.
