BOCCACCIO, Giovanni. Il Decamerone . Londra [i.e. Paris: Prault], 1757. 5 volumes, 8° (202 x 124mm). Engraved title to each volume engraved portrait of Boccaccio, 110 engraved plates by Le Mire, Lempereur, Flipart and others after Gravelot (89), Boucher, Cochin and Eisen, most plates with paraphs on verso, engraved head- and tailpieces throughout after Gravelot. (Small worm-track in two final leaves in vol.II.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt, covers with rule and dog-tooth roll enclosing a foliage and insect roll, spines in six compartments, green morocco lettering-pieces in two, the others with overall repeat decoration, g.e.. Provenance : Falquet de Planta (18th-century armorial bookplate); A.Vautier (bookplate). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST PRINTING OF THESE PLATES (as indicated by the paraphs), on papier de Hollande . The impressions of the head- and tailpieces in this edition are apparently superior to the later French-language edition. One of the "livres illustrés des plus réussis de tout le XVIII . siècle": Cohen-de Ricci 158; Ray French 15; Sander 182. (5)
