Boccaccio, Giovanni. Fiammetta de Boccaccio. (Florence: heirs of Filippo Giunta, January 1524)
A reprint of the 1517 edition, in an elegant Parisian binding. The attribution to Etienne Roffet, royal binder to François I, has been made on the basis of the binding tools, which appear on other bindings by him for the royal library; see Marie-Pierre Laffitte and Fabienne Le Bars, Reliures royales de la Renaissance: la librairie de Fontainebleau 1544-1570 (Paris, 1999), pp.39-40, with a direct mention of this binding. It is also illustrated in Anthony Hobson & Paul Culot, Italian and French 16th-century bookbindings (Brussels 1991), no. 28.
8vo (162 x 95 mm). Italic type, 30 lines plus headline. collation: a-o8: 112 leaves (o7 leaf blank). Woodcut device on o8 (otherwise blank). (Lower blank corner of d8 slightly defective.)
binding: Contemporary Parisian brown morocco gilt by Etienne Roffet (170 x 100 mm), probably dating to around 1540, border made of gilt and blind fillets with corner fleurons, lettered on both covers FIAMMETTA DE BOCCACCIO, spine with blind ruling along bands, gilt edges, stubs from two pairs of ties, in modern black morocco drop-backed box. (Ends of spine chipped, lower cover with small area of rubbing.)
provenance: De Granmondt, inscription on title-page inside a circle — Antoine-Augustin Renouard, Catalogue de la bibliothèque d'un amateur (Paris, 1819), III, p.219 — Robert Stayner Holford (1808-1892), his manuscript note pasted to flyleaf, "Beautiful copy in the original Venetian morocco binding", sale, Sotheby & Co., London, 5-9 December 1927, lot 113, £34, to Maggs — Librairie Gumuchian, Paris, their purple G stamp on inside lower cover, their Catalogue 12 (1929), item 28 (mentioning Roffet) — Raphaël Esmerian (1903-1976), booklabel, sale, Ader, Picard, Tajan & Guérin, Paris, 6 June 1972, lot 39, 6,000FF, to Claude Guérin — Michel Maignan (1940-2019), bookplate — Michel Wittock (1936-2020), bookplate, sale, Christie's, London, 7 July 2004, lot 21. acquisition: Purchased at the preceding sale via Robin Halwas. references: Edit16 6261; Pettas, Giunta 195; Renouard XLVIII/74
