BLUE BOLT WEIRD TALES No. 114 Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Description: Star Publications. August, 1952. CGC certified: VG+ (4.5). Light tan to off-white pages. Jay Disbrow art. L.B. Cole cover. Pre-Code horror was the rock & roll of its day. Before the chaotic energies of postwar youth coalesced into a rebellious musical idiom, those energies manifested in horror comics, a medium with the visceral power to thrill the young while appalling their elders. It's not a coincidence that rock & roll didn't penetrate mainstream consciousness until 1954-55, just as pre-Code horror was giving up the ghost—having lost one outlet for the release of aggressions, it's inevitable that kids would seek another. This mag's back cover ad promotes an album of "Hill Billy Hits," a category that anticipates the rockabilly sounds that would soon shake America's windows and rattle its walls. L.B. Cole introduced the imagery of '60s rock 'n roll psychedelia to readers of pre-Code horror mags a decade ahead of schedule. "As far as is known, Leonard Cole didn't base his drawings on hallucinatory visions, but some of his covers do share certain characteristics with psychedelic art. A number of them feature a swirling/pinwheel design... Others sport target effects, with concentric circles of different colors behind the foreground figures... The most widespread psychedelic aspect of Cole's work is his penchant for bright colors in eye-catching, even eye-irritating, juxtaposition." —Bill Schelly, Black Light: The World of L.B. Cole. A limited edition of 100 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues are available. Over 200 pages, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcovers $40, dust-jacketed hardcover with limitation plate $200. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com or visit: https://www.pbagalleries.com/content/comics/. R. Crumb says, "I found [PBA's catalogue] so interesting that I am saving it for the texts that accompany the comics which were put up for auction. This is some of the best commentary I’ve yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books. I especially enjoyed the reviews of the post-war horror comics. Great. Priceless." Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2021 Comic Book sale. Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age and Silver Age comics, original art and ephemera sought. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
