"Like many mathematical practitioners, Blagrave found steady employment in designing, erecting and repairing sundials for churches, mansions and gardens. And since dialling was a favourite amateur pursuit, a text-book and a teacher were always in demand. Blagrave is exceptionally clear and practical, and explains the various ways in which the meridian can be established by relative positions of prominent stars or with simple improvised instruments" (Taylor Mathematical Practitioners p.327).
