ATLAS. BLAEU, WILLEM - JOAN Theatrum orbis terrarum sive atlas novus. Partis primae pars altera. I-II. Amsterdam (J. and C. Blaeu) 1640. Vol. 1-2 in one binding. Large folio (470x300 mm). Hand-coloured engraved title, 114 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps (not complete, lacking 6 maps, lacking 1 engraved title, title with some dampstains, reinforced to margin, large map of Lithuania with damages and repairs, about 10 maps partly defective or/ and with repairs, some of the folding ones with repairs or holes in folds, about 10 maps with dampstains to upper part, at the end dampstain to margins, about 10 with some loss of colours, offsetting due to some dampstaining, partly with minor repairs to margins, partly some soiling and minor spotting. Printed titles with repairs, Index (4 pages), some repairs to text and margins, some with textloss. Later half calf binding (20th century), renovated with older spine mounted, redspeckled edges, partly worn. Volume I, Part 1. World, Scandinavia and Germany. 1649; Part 2. Netherlands, together 120 maps. Among the maps are the World map, Iceland, Poland (partly defective), Russia, the Baltics, Norway, Europe with Netherlands, Belgium, Germany. The most well-known publishers regarding cartography were Willem Janzsoon Blaeu and his son Johannes. They published their world atlas Theatrum orbis terrarum in many editions and different languages from 1635. These first two parts from the Latin edition which consists of 6 volumes.
