BLAEU, Johannes (1596-1673). Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive atlas novus. Pars Quarta [England and Wales]. Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, 1648. 2° (524 x 344mm). Latin text, mounted on guards throughout. Letterpress title overslip with hand-coloured engraved surround, illustrations, 11 hand-coloured, 57 hand-coloured county engraved maps only (of 58, lacking Britannia... temporibus Anglo-Saxonum , old dampstaining, some maps spotted.) Contemporary vellum gilt, g.e. (spine torn, lightly soiled, bowed, remains of green ties). Volume IV from Bleau's Theatrum , on England and Wales. The county maps in this attractive atlas set a standard of engraving and cartographical design that was not surpassed by any English mapmaker until the work of Cary and Greenwood in the early 19th century.
