Engraved allegorical frontispieces, arms of Emanuel II, 4 portraits of the Duchesse of Savoy and Emanuel II, double-page engraved genealogical table of the house of Savoy, 134 engraved maps, plans and views, 14 folding, 124 double-page. (Some light discolouration principally to text, occasional spotting, small holes affecting outer margins of several quires in volume I, a few outer margins close shaved to plate mark.) Contemporary calf, double-rule gilt borders, central gilt arabesques, spines in nine compartments, with red and green lettering pieces, upper covers lettered M.de Secus (joints of volume II and corners volume I neatly restored, slightly rubbed. Provenance : M.de Secus (contemporary ownership lettering on upper covers). An attractive and tall set of the first printing of the Townbooks of Northern Italy, one of the great topographical works of Italy, this edition issued by the Blaeu heirs in 1682. In his lifetime Joan Blaeu published the 3 volumes on Rome, the Vatican and Naples, his heirs followed with the present work in Latin, which was subsequently reissued in Dutch text in 1693. Later editions by Mortier and Alberts combined the various parts. Koeman Bl 75 and 76. (2)
