BLACK CAT MYSTERY No. 47 Publisher: Harvey [Indicia: Home Comics, Inc.] Date Published: December, 1953 Description: VG/Fine (5.0). Mild spine stress, top staple very lightly pulled, short tear to right edge of front cover, hairline creases to right edge, corner creases, toning to back cover edges, distributor's mark in blue ballpoint ink ("6 10 / 7") to "B" in "BLACK", book is nice and flat. Cream to light tan pages. Cover: Lee Elias. Art: Bob Powell, Howard Nostrand, Manny Stallman, Joe Certa. GPAnalysis: A 5.0 sold for $272 in 10/19. Lee Elias's cover, which features a pockmarked alien landscape and a crashed rocketship with a rotting corpse protruding from its hull, seems to borrow elements from two classic Al Feldstein sci-fi covers: Weird Fantasy #11 (Jan-Feb '52) and Weird Fantasy #20 (July-August '53). The swiping continues under the covers, with two tales inspired by popular '50s films: "The influence of popular media becomes quite apparent in Black Cat Mystery around this time. #47 features 'Low Noon,' a forgettable spoof of the Gary Cooper classic, and 'Regent 3,' a take-off on Barbara Stanwyk's film 'Sorry, Wrong Number.' Hate to say that neither one is as good as the film!" — George Suarez, Tales Too Terrible To Tell #8. NEC: 1993, p. 32. Enjoying the Sale? Order a fully-illustrated softcover catalogue for 30 bucks.
