(Band 1, S. 444f). Darwin reagierte positiv auf den Vorschlag von Alfred Russel Wallace, Spencers neuen Ausdruck “survival of the fittest” als Alternative zu “natural selection” zu verwenden, und übernahm diesen Ausdruck. – Alter Besitzereintrag auf Vorsatz. Band 1 anfangs mit einigen Eintragungen und Anstreichungen in Bleistift. Wenig gebräunt.
