AN ATTRACTIVE MOSAïQUé BINDING on an elegant prayer book, first published in 1631 by the writing master Pierre Moreau and dedicated to Marie de Medici, whose arms are printed on the verso of the 25th leaf of this edition. Other copies of Moreau's work are known to have been bound by Florimond Badier and other fine binders. Brunet notes that Moreau was the originator of matrices imitating hand-writing and was appointed 'imprimeur du roi' in 1642, printing various works in calligraphic characters. Copies are known with two additional typographic leaves bound at the end containing a notice to the reader and part of the privilege; apparently no precedence has been established. Cf. Brunet III, 1895-6.
