Full brown mottled calf, covers with the arms of the Marquise de Pompadour, spine richly gilt, original marbled endpapers, all edges red. 11 x 8 1/2 inches (28 x 21 cm); frontispiece, xlii, 358, [6] pp., with 100 engraved vignettes after Gillot. Neatly restored retaining the original spine and endpapers, the text with some toning and occasionally spotting, generally quite clean. This book was number 706 in the auction of her books held in 1765, the Catalogue des livres de la bibliotheque de feue... Although with some restorations, this is a handsome example from the library from this remarkable woman, born into the haute bourgeoisie as Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, but elevated to become the official maîtresse-en-titre to King Louis XV, who ennobled her under the ancient (but extinct) title of Pompadour.
