BINDING-GEORGE IV] The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments ... Oxford: Bensley, Cooke, and Collingwood, 1816. Full deep blue velvet, with the arms of George IV on both covers, red glazed endpapers with dentelles tooled in blind, all edges gilt, housed in an elaborate dark-blue morocco locking case with drop-down front by Wallis. 10 x 1/4 x 8 inches (26 x 20 cm); unpaginated. The velvet rubbed, especially to the upper cover, but a remarkable survival from the Coronation of 19 July 1821, one of the great spectacles of the age. Front joint of box worn. The Mortimer L. Schiff copy (whose great collection of bookbindings was sold by Sotheby's in 1938), with his small leather label on the endpaper. Traditionally, royal coronation copies of the Book of Common Prayer are bound in blue or purple velvet, in bindings of various degrees of ornateness. Laid-in is a printed copy of Martin Luther's Hymn, sung at the ceremony and in a separate binder, the Ceremonial for the Interment of the King, July 1837, with the order of service, apparently belonging to a member of the choir. Also in the group is an appointment on vellum signed by George III, 1762. C
