BINDING AND FORE-EDGE PAINTING -- The Book of Common Prayer , London: John Murray 1863. 4° (214 x 147mm.). Half title, title printed in red and black within gilt foliate border. Early 20th-century red morocco gilt by Henry Young & Sons, covers with triple fillet border with green morocco onlay enclosing outer compartment with pointillé tools and dots, central panel outlined with straight and curved fillets with green morocco onlay, centre-piece of pointillé and dot tools enclosing quatrefoil and four-pointed star design, spine in six compartments, each with green morocco and gilt strapwork and tools, lettered in one, the patterned gilt edges with THREE FOREDGE PAINTINGS of Bethlehem, the Crucifixion after Perugino, and Jerusalem, silk liners. (Edges very lightly rubbed, liners on endpapers loosening at foredges). Provenance : Colonel Gaskell's library (pencil inscription). See illustration on the back cover of this catalogue.
