British photographer and photojournalist Bill Brandt is known primarily for his images of British social classes and a later series of distorted nudes. This portrait of a miner at his evening meal was made in the North of England for a body of work documenting the effects of the Depression. Brandt began to experiment with contrast and grain in the 1950s, and this aesthetic is reflected in these later prints (lots 155-158).
