Adams B 1009; Brunet I, 875; Darlow/M. 6109; Mortimer 65; Renouard I, 27, 1; Schreiber 37. - "The first in the series of Latin Bibles printed by Robertus Stephanus , the eminent printer and scholar... This Bible represents the earliest genuine attempt at a critical edition of the Vulgate text. Three good MSS. were collated for it and compared with the best printed editions, including the Complutensian Polyglot... This recension of R. Stephanus incurred the censure of the Theological Faculty of Paris. In spite of repeated attacks, however, his Bible passed through many editions" (Darlow/M.). "The monumental first Estienne edition of the Bible, as well as Robert's first project as a scholar-printer, for which he had begun examining ms. and printed sources in 1524, two years before he became independent. This is Robert Estienne's first major work - also his first folio publication - and the book which immediately established him as the most outstanding figure in the Paris booktrade of his time... In this monumental volume there appears for the first time R. Estienne's large olive-tree device... This volume also marks the first use of Geoffroy Tory's two sizes of beautiful criblé initials" (Schreiber). - Tit. angeschmutzt, mit teilw. getilgtem altem Besitzvermerk "Charles Danthon" (Jurist und Politiker) u. größeren Randreparaturen, Bl. 2 mit hs.
