Mit eingemalten Initialen in Rot. 495 (st. 496; fehlt der Titel; Bl. 5 u. die zwei letzten weiß). Blindgeprägter Schweinsldr. d. 16. Jh. mit zwei Schließen; gebräunt u. berieben, Ecken u. Kanten teilw. bestoßen, Kapital beschädigt. Hain-C. 3107; GW 4269; BMC III, 789; Goff B-592; Bibelslg. Württ. LB, D 148. - Die erste Bibelausgabe in Oktav-Format und der erste Druck von Johannes Froben, in kleinster Type zweispaltig gedruckt. "Sein (Froben) erster selbständiger Druck vom 27.6.1491 in einer der kleinsten Typen, die je verwendet wurden, ist eine Biblia latina ohne Kommentar. Die Type, keineswegs von Amerbach, sondern eigene Erfindung, verrät schon den Meister des Buchdruckes" (NDB V, 638). - Teilw. stark braunrandig, teilw. fleckig bzw. fingerfleckig, stellenweise gebräunt. Buchblock gelockert, Innengelenke eingerissen, s1 mit Eckabriss, p8v einige Buchstaben nachgezogen. Es fehlt der Titel. Erstes vorhandenes Blatt mit Besitzvermerk des 17. Jahrhunderts, 2. weißes Bl. am Schluss alt beschrieben. The first Bible printed in octavo format, and the first book signed by Johann Froben, founder of a great printer’s dynasty and friend of Erasmus. To keep the number of leaves within a single volume, Froben used an unusually small but very clear gothic fount, in today’s nomenclature of 7-point size. The octavo format was clearly welcomed by readers. - Heavier brownstaining, some spotting, thumbing and browning, few restored marginal defects. Bookblock broken, inner hinges cracked. Lower corner of s1 torn away, few letters of p4v supplied by hand. Lacking the title. 17th cent. ownership inscription to first present leaf, old annotations to second last blank. Bound in 16th cent. blindstamped pigskin, two clasps; browned and rubbed, extremities and head of spine worn.
