BIBLE, Old Testament, English. [ The Holie Bible faithfully translated into English...by the English College of Doway , Douai, Laurence Kellam, 1609-10]. 2 volumes in one, 4° (223 x 163mm). Title of volume II within a typographical border, woodcut head- and tailpieces, errata leaf at end of each volume (volume I lacks title, volume II lacks final blank, upper margins at beginning lightly waterstained, top blank fore-corners of last few leaves nibbled by rodents, a few unimportant spots and stains). Contemporary dark calf, gilt ornament in 3 panels of spine, the other 2 with new labels, sides ruled in gilt and blind with gilt arabesque centrepiece (a few repairs, rubbed). Provenance : Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners). FIRST EDITION of the Roman Catholic Old Testament in English printed twenty-seven years after its companion volume, the Reims New Testament. It had been translated at the same time by Gregory Martin and others with the help of Cardinal Allen, but not printed owing to lack of funds. STC 2207; DMH 300; Allison and Rogers 107.
