Provenance : contemporary annotations in several hands (slightly shaved). FIRST EDITION OF LUTHER'S TRANSLATION OF PART II OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. The impact of Luther's translation of the Bible was immediate, resulting in virtually instantaneous reprints of the Wittemberg editions in Strassburg, Augsburg, Basel, and elsewhere. The present volume bears witness to the plethora of editions suddenly available to a contemporary audience, bringing together the Wittemberg first edition of part II of the Old Testament, and reprints of the same year of part III and a concordance to the New Testament. The latter two parts of the volume are VERY RARE, neither is in the extensive Bible collection at Stuttgart. The OT part III is listed in Panzer, and a 1525 edition in the Stuttgart collection (E-134, same collation but with P6 blank) corresponds closely but is clearly different. The concordance appears to be unrecorded; indeed, no Bible edition printed by Schott in 1524 is known. Among the texts used as the basis for his translation of the Old Testament was the Hebrew Bible printed at Brescia in 1494; Luther's own copy is preserved at Berlin. Adams B-1251 (pt.
