Provenance : Stargard monastery (library stamp). EARLY ILLUSTRATED EDITION of Luther's bible. The title borders have been attributed to Lucas Cranach the Younger, the first armorial, the second illustrating scenes from both the Old and New Testament. German Protestant publishers popularized Luther's translation by extensively illustrating their editions. The influence of Luther's version on the German language was as deep as that of the authorized version on the English tongue. Adams B-1178; Schmidt, pp. 223-226, 231-232.
