BIBLE, in French, Geneva version -- La Bible, qui est toute la saincte Escriture, contenant le vieil & le Nouueau Testament . [Geneva:] Antoine Reboul, 1560. 4° (229 x 145mm). General title and title to New Testament, large woodcut device on both titles, woodcut folding plate, and 25 woodcut illustrations, printed music of the Psalms of David. Roman type, double column, shoulder notes. (A few shoulder notes shaved, title and last leaf mounted, folding plate torn with some loss and mounted, expert repairs to some edges, occasionally with loss of a few letters.) Dark olive morocco janseniste by Zaehnsdorf, 1896(?), gilt edges (joints lightly scuffed). Provenance : Jemmett family records on flyleaves. An early edition, and the first illustrated edition, of the French Geneva version, a revision of Olivetan's edition by Calvin and Theodore de Bèze. Some of these woodcuts were used the same year in the English edition of the Geneva Bible. Schreiber ( Estiennes 154) wrongly credits the Estienne edition of 1565 as the first illustrated editon of the French Geneva version. Not in Darlow & Moule. Adams B-1136 has Reboul's folio edition of the same year, which, according to Chambers, very probably post-dates the 4° edition; Chambers, Bibliography of French Bibles , 263. B1560reb(4°). The Metrical Psalms are bound at the end, as often.
