Il s'agit de la première édition de ce texte publiée par Estienne avec des illustrations. Elle est mise à l'index de l'université de Paris en 1549, et à l'index pontifical dix ans plus tard. Les gravures seront abondamment reprises et copiées par nombre d'imprimeurs. 4 parties en 1 vol. in-folio (420 x 276 mm). Troisème édition de Robert Estienne, la première illustrée. Initiales et illustrations gravées sur bois, dont 5 à pleine page. Exemplaire réglé. Annoté aux encres noire et brune par plusieurs mains anciennes. Reliure de l’époque en veau marbré, filets dorés sur les plats, dos refait, traces de pièces d'angle disparues, tranches dorées, ciselées et peintes. Dos refait.
