FANFARE BINDING OF CA. 1575, French gold-tooled red morocco over pasteboard, sides decorated to an all-over design of shaped compartments and leafy ornament, spines with four raised bands but not quite uniformly tooled, gilt edges (spines restored, several joints cracked, slightly rubbed in places). Provenance : E. Damphoux, President of the College of St. Mary at Baltimore (bookplate); Baltimore, Archiepiscopal Library (bookplate); Washington, D.C., Catholic University of America (stamps). Second Estienne edition (third Estienne edition of the Hebrew Psalter). Early Hebrew printed books, whether from Christian or Jewish presses, are extremely rare in elaborately decorated bindings.
