Printed in Yiddish (without the Hebrew text), only the title line and the opening word of each chapter printed in square Hebrew Script. 4to, 187 x 152 mm. (7 3/8 x 6 in.), bound in a bifolium from a manuscript missal on vellum (Germany, 13th century, texTura script with oratorical neumes and simple red Lombard initials), 4 leather ties, endleaves renewed, darkened; some even browning and marginal staining, a few small marginal tears. Very rare. Vinograd, Prague 446(?), who refers only to Steinschneider (1272) without giving the collation or leaf count (no copy in JNUL); Steinschneider 1272; Cowley 115; Zedner 128; not in Friedberg, Muneles or Roest. The Yiddish translation of the Book of Psalms by Elijah Levita was the first to be published. It is based on earlier translations which closely followed the Hebrew text. It became a popular work, went through several editions, and served as a model to other translators. [First edition Venice 1545; Zurich 1558; Mantua 1562; Cracow 1598 (Shemeruk nr. 38 translation after Mantua 1562); Prague 1688]. A second and different Yiddish translation of the Book of Psalms by Moses Stendal, was published, for the first time in Poland, at Cracow 1586. (Shemeruk, Yiddish Literature in Poland, p. 87 nr. 20 and according to Shemeruk probably the only edition of this tranlsation) All the above mentioned editions are very rare. Furthermore the registration of our copy in the bibliographies are inaccurate and confusing. The identity of the translator is not known and it is not clear whether our copy follows one of the two above mentioned known translations, or it is a new independent third translation.
