Israel ben Abraham Bak (1797-1874), started off his activity as a Hebrew printer in his native Berdichev, Ukraine, where he ran a printing office from 1815 until 1821. In 1831 he emigrated to Palestine, where he published well over a hundred books and brochures, first in Safed, later, as a pioneer of Hebrew printing, in Jerusalem. This work is among the first that came off his press. Part of his personal history is related by Bak in the introduction to this very edition of the Book of Psalms.
