Besler (Basilius) Three plates from the Hortus Eystettensis, including: Sorgum fructu rubro / Sorgo fructu albo; Caryophyllus sylvestris fiore laciniato carneo / Caryophyllus sylvestris prolifero / Brunella coerulea magna flore [and] Scorzonera latifolia / Barba capre, third edition with text on verso, hand-coloured engravings, on heavy paper, some creasing, framed & glazed, plates 490 x 395 mm, Eichstatt, 1713 (3) *** As part of a radical building programme at Willibaldsburg castle, the Prince Bishop of Eichstätt created a famous pleasure garden filled with flowers from around the world. In 1611, Nuremberg apothecary Basilius Besler set about immortalising it in detailed and delicate engravings. This proved to be very shrewd, as the garden was largely destroyed in a siege by Swedish troops in 1633.
