London: Richard Bentley 1840. 2 volumes, 8° (217 x 143mm). Folding chart, 2 aquatint frontispieces, wood-engravings in text. Contemporary polished calf gilt, covers bordered in blind and gilt, Eton leaving inscription on first blank, (covers a little soiled). FIRST EDITION and one of the best books on the whale fishery according to Herman Melville, by the expedition scientist aboard 'Tuscan.' He details the anatomy and habits of whales and the best way of conducting the industry. In the course of the voyage Bennett called at Pitcairn Island and gives an account of the 'Bounty' mutineers, Tahiti, the Marquesas and Hawaii. Hill, p. 22. Sabin 4726. (2)
