BENJAMIN FRANKLIN IMPRINT - NEW JERSEY LAWS] Anno regni Georgii II ... At a General Assembly of the colony of New-Jersey, cont... . Philadelphia : Printed by B. Franklin, printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty for the province of New-Jersey, 1748. First edition, ownership signature on the title of Robert H. Morris. Disbound, housed in chemise and black cloth case. 12 1/4 x 7 3/8 inches (31.5 x 19 cm); 53 pp., contents on verso of p. 53. Collation: [A]-N^(2) O1. Title with repaired corners, the final leaf re-margined at header, a 1747 notation in ink to title, repair to three corners, stab holes to gutter and some discolor along binding edge, some spotting but generally clean internally, a typed letter at end describes the purchase of the book for $350 in 1935. This is the final piece of official printing which Franklin executed for the Province of New Jersey before Bradford took over. This is a very interesting association copy, as Robert Hunter Morris (1700-65), when acting as Deputy Governor of Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War, would argue against Franklin in the Penn family taxation debate. In the debate, Franklin spoke for the Pennsylvania Assembly who desired taxes to be levied on the lands belonging to the Penn's in order to raise a defense for the colony as the frontier burned which the Penn's refused. Of note within these laws are an Act in Support of the Government which allows the payment of Franklin and Bradford. This also includes An act to pardon the persons guilty of the insurrections, riots and disorders raised and committed in this Province, which responded to the recent insurrections by the "Clinker Lot Right Men" (the rioters in Newark, see elsewhere in this catalogue). Rare: we find no copies in the auction record and only three copies held institutionally. Miller Benjamin Franklin's Philadelphia Printing, 449; Evans 6200. C The New York City Bar Association
