Oblong 8 o (105 x 166 mm.), 184 woodcut illustrations (some light staining). 17th century vellum, edges gilt. Provenance : MR (bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF THE FRENCH TRANSLATION which was preceeded by the Latin version published in 1553 (see previous lot). According to Brunet, three versions of the translation were issued in Paris in the same year. Pierre Belon was one of the first explorer naturalists, and his classification was based on direct observation rather than derived from others.
