BELLOT, Joseph René (1826-1853). Memoirs. With His Journal of a Voyage in the Polar Seas, in Search of Sir John Franklin . London: Hurst and Blackett, 1855. The first edition in English. Such was Bellot’s popularity that a subscription was undertaken to dedicate a monument to him near the Royal Hospital of Greenwich. He was notably respected not only among the English but also the Eskimos. The covers of the present work depict that monument erected to his memory. Arctic Bib. 1305; Sabin 4566; TPL 8402. Two volumes, octavo (196 x 121mm). Frontispiece portrait, 5 ad pages in vol. one (minor spotting to portrait). Publishers’ brown cloth stamped in gilt (recased and with some neat repair to spine ends, old wood-engraving to upper pastedown). Provenance: Bertram Plimer (1929-2009; Franklin Search bookplate laid in) – Patrick McGahern Books.
