BINDING DESIGNED BY BEHMER, EXECUTED FOR HIM BY J. KOHNERT at Charlottenburg, Berlin c. 1927: gold-tooled dark-flecked ivory vellum over heavy boards, panelled sides with multiple solid and dotted fillets, the decor composed of repetition of two arabesque tools and stars, the designer's small dolphin emblem above center of front cover, gilt edges, Kohnert's tiny blind stamp on back pastedown. Modern folding cloth case. Provenance : the author, small autograph correction on p. 58. Offprint from Stammtisch-Blättern der Maximilian-Gesellschaft , bound for the author/designer's own collection by Kohnert with tools designed by Behmer, which were only used on bindings executed for him. Several tools can be found reproduced on the plates in this essay. "Behmer was a most original German book illustrator and graphic artist, often on a minuscule scale; he was also a typographer and type designer, and designed bindings for publishers. Most of the small number of individual bindings he designed were executed for his own collection. In the above essay he describes some of these bindings and his aims and thoughts concerning them" (BBB Wittockiana 52).
