BECQUEREL, Henri. Autograph manuscript, notes for two lectures on radioactivity delivered at the Royal Society and Royal Institute, London, 6 and 7 March 1902. 12 pages, including title-leaf and final blank, oblong 8 o (4 o sheet cut in half), lined paper, written on rectos only, few marginal notations in colored pencil . THE DISCOVERER OF RADIOACTIVITY REVIEWS THE RAPID PROGRESS OF RESEARCH IN RADIOACTIVE PHENOMENA. Becquerel's notes form the basis for two lectures delivered a day apart at the Royal Socety and the Royal Institute in London. The lecture at the Royal Society, delivered on the 6th of March, is loosely sketched by Becquerel on 4+ pages, providing a brief account of the research into radioactivity since his discovery in 1896. The second lecture, delivered at the Royal Institute on the 7th of March, is outlined in more detailed terms, densely written and illustrated with marginal sketches which presumably Becquerel drew on the hall's blackboard to illustrate his talk. He summarizes the discoveries and advances of Röntgen, Kelvin, Lippmann, Schmidt, Curie, Giesel, Rutherford, and others. [ With: ] BECQUEREL, Henri. Sur la Radio-activité de la matière . London: William Clowes and Sons, 1902. 8 o. 15 photographic figures on 7 plates. Stapled as issued (small rust staining from staples). FIRST EDITION of Becquerel's lecture delivered at the Royal Institute on 7 March 1902. The text elaborates on Becquerel's lecture notes. Copies of the lecture are extremely rare. (2)
