BECKFORD, William (1759-1844) -- The Valuable library of Books in Fonthill Abbey. A Catalogue of the Magnificent, Rare, and Valuable Library (of 20,000 volumes)... Also, of the books of prints, galleries of art, curious misslas and manuscripts, the Persian and Chinese drawings. Which will be sold by auction by Mr. Phillips. [Fonthill]: printed by J. Davy, 9 September 1823. 5 parts in one volume, large 8 o (236 x 150 mm). Steel-engraved frontispiece depicting a view of James Wyatt's 300 foot tower. (Slightly browned.) Contemporary half red roan (rebacked), original printed label on front cover (some overall wear). Provenance : A.L. McLaughlin (bookplate). Complete copy (despite very erroneous pagination) describing in all 3960 lots of books and 1588 lots of furniture, paintings, drawings and other decorative objects, sold over a period of thirty-seven days. Due to financial mismanagement and depreciation of his West India property, Lord Beckford was forced in 1822 to sell his birthhouse to John Farquhar who immediately proceeded to put the contents up for sale.
